2000 Exhibition NORDEN" in the Kunsthalle Vienna
Contemporary Art from Northern Europe
The Kunsthalle was a temporary building for contemporary art, that had been demolished in the meantime. The challenge in the design of the exhibition Norden was the huge number of artists - 29 from all fife Nordic countries.
The rectangular white cube of the Kunsthalle offered limited space, but the concept aimed for spatial definitions of areas for each artists - showing different works of one person as a set. Of cause the video works needed closed areas. We started by cutting up the space by means of trajectories zones where defined - building up a structure of closed and semi-open spaces.
The visual interactions between the individual spaces were precisely regulated. None of the spaces was touching the perimeter of the gallery.Making use of the four cardinal points of the compass, the Kunsthalle was geographically oriented. After a system, according to each quarter of the wind-rose a different colour, the walls in the exhibition where categorised and painted depending on their orientation to the north-pole.
