The spatial conception to Baroque party
Starting the design for a new exhibition always demands a profound analysis of the existing spaces. When doing the inauguration exhibition in a new museum the analysis is even more intensive. In the confrontation with the rather dominant architecture of the new Kunsthallein the recently built Museums Quartier of Vienna we developed a strategy to create spatial freedom and independence without hiding the barrel vaulted space behind false walls and ceilings.
The conception of baroque party is based on the term ephemeral and the idea of garden, baroque being the heyday of garden art and temporary installations. Two geometric figures, the star and the ellipse, form the ground structure of the design. All inserted elements are suspended from the ceiling, without touching the floor. This emphasises the scène tic and temporary character. The rectangular space is transformed by huge diagonal hedges. The suspended bodies are covered with translucent glass fibre fabric. The virtual crossing point defines the centre.
Six geometrically defined territories emerge around the centre. The chosen lay out establishes an open spatial matrix, allowing a relation between all six positions by means of simultaneousness, superposition and spatial transparency.
