MUMUT Music Theatre, Graz, Austria, 1998

The concept
Hard + soft
To the "Lichtenfelsgasse" a "hard", massive block is developed. The openings are reduced to a minimum. This block contains all permanently used rooms of the MUMUT. It is introverted as the rooms it contains. The inner communication is developed in a vertical cut. This cut separates the block in two parts. One is for rehearsal and preparation the other for performing.

The foyer
The foyer areas serve the TRANSITION. They built up a spatial filter that extends in front of the block. This "soft" zone filters in cross direction the tension between the massive building and the landscape of the park. In the longitudinal direction the foyer takes up the movements of the audience before and after the performance. It works as a filter between the outside world and the world of music. The dynamic character of the space is a reference of the transitory of sound and the order and regularity inherent to music.

The "dodekaphonic" facade
The narrow glass slots in the wood facade are distributed according to Arnold Schönberg's 12-tone method. The folded wood facade has 12 flat parts. The vertical partition is also divided in 12 parts - the 12 tones of the scale. The principle of the 12 tone composition is the last and important international contribution of Austria in the field of modern music. The use of this principle for the design of the foyer facade is a homage to the spiritual discipline of the 12 tone composition. It shall remind us of the heavy destiny the creators of this music got through in Austria.
