TV-World Hamburg, Germany
2000 Competition
The situation:
After more than 2 generations 32 hectares of land is returned back to civil government. Since one can remember this peace of land has been a closed military territory, an alien in the town.
The tank barrack was a forbidden zone for the citizens.
The design idea:
The TV-World creates its fascination especially from the tension between reality and fiction or dream.
The contrasts between urban space/landscape, clear geometry/free form, comedy/drama, knowledge/experiment,
are used for the presentation.
Taking advantage of the specific site a central square is defined. The square gives the needed identity an open space for all forms of use and visual projections. Instead of a tower as a sign for the Wannsbeck district a specific spatial situation in the urban context becomes the symbol of the TV-World. The spatial experience is the trademark of the layout:
Numerous activities, from strolling about and relaxing after a long visit in the theme park,
up to concerts can take place in this open-air arena.
The elements of the lay-out
The theme hotel with a wide atrium stands at the end of the media plaza. The walls of the rooms are used as interactive media screens. The hotel guests become active creators by opening or closing the screens in front of their rooms.
A media conference centre is developed along the TV-World hall. Together with the hotel this buildings are forming a functional unit, animating the square until late in the evening The TV-World hall offer place for 5000 spectators. Big TV-shows are produced here.
The basis for the theme park is an artificial-organic modelled landscape. Over and sometimes cut into this landscape a horizontal parcour is connecting all indoor and outdoor attractions. The even geometric orders of the attractions are in great contrast to the free-formed landscape. This formal and ideal dialogue creates the specific character of the TV-World theme park.
